This series, She is Water, is inspired by a novella I first read in college, The Awakening, by Kate Chopin. The story explores the sea as both an instrument and a symbol for Edna Pontellier's physical, psychological, and spiritual awakening.
“The voice of the sea is seductive; never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude; to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation.”
The sea represented the unknown, yet carries a sense of comfort.
“The foamy wavelets curled up to her white feet, and coiled like serpents about her ankles. The touch of the sea is sensuous, enfolding the body in its soft, close embrace,”
The sea changes as does life. We are tied to the sea. We are of the sea. We go back to the sea, from where we came.
