Space Between began in 2015 while exploring a few abandoned farm houses in Missouri. At first, I only photographed the exteriors, not really knowing what was inside. With permission, I returned and photographed the interior. I felt a connection to these houses - a connection to past lives lived, things left behind and the feelings that remain. I felt centered and calm.
A house is a sacred place that shelters us and provides security. It is a symbol of the Great Mother - the center of civilization. Digging deeper, some believe that what happens inside a house happens inside ourselves. The house is a symbol of our universe - the roof as heaven, the windows as deities and the body as the earth.
These houses offer me a sense of spirituality. Within them, there is beauty and pain. Within them, I feel my mother’s presence. I feel her strength and my loneliness - in that space between.
She died far too young at 51. I had her here for 30 years.
As 10 years passed, then 20, and now 32, my connection to her grows - in that space between. This series continues to develop, with other locations but with the same purpose and connection.
